Wandering about at the Guwahati Railway Station with a lost look, Praveen was spotted by our child friendly staff and brought to Snehalaya, Dhirenpare on 4th June 2009. With his bright face and cheerful smile this child aged about 9 years won the hearts of all in the institution.  He said that he is from Nepal and because of his abusive father he was compelled to leave home. He stayed with us for a few days but slowly he expressed his desire to go back home. Respecting his decision, we decided to repatriate him back to Nepal with the permission of the Child Welfare Committee, Kamrup,

Subhash, one of our staff from Nepal was given the responsibility as he was familiar with that place and the language.  They embarked on their journey to Nepal on18th June 09 and reached Siliguri the next day. The connecting journey from Nepal was tedious as they had to go a long way to Chardi Village, via Daumali. When they finally reached the place and met his grandmother, Subash was surprised to learn that though Praveen’s native place is Nepal, but at present his parents stay in Hyderabad where his father is employed as a driver in an organization.

Subash is experienced to handle such situations and without wasting a moment took the phone number of his father and immediately contacted him. It was quite fortunate that his father responded at once and within two days came to Siliguri where Subash handed over Praveen to his father. It was an extremely satisfying experience to have saved the child from falling into the hands of scrupulous people who would have exploited him. Snehalaya is committed towards working for children and with such successful restorations we feel even more equipped to handle children and place them into safe hands. We wish Praveen the best for his future.

Mr. Marcus Murmu is one of the oldest serving members of the Snehalaya family. He has rendered invaluable support and service to the institution as Office Assistant since its inception in 2001. For the first issue of the “Snehadhwoni”, Marcus shares with us his experience in Snehalaya:

“I joined Snehalaya on 9th of January 2001, when it had just started. There were only three of us – Fr. Lukose, Mrs. Sylvia Rose, and myself. There were only eight boys, who used to live with Fr. Lukose in a small hut at Dhirenpara. The office used to function from a room of the church building at Pan Bazar. The work began to grow quickly. It was fun working together as we were working for the needy children. I feel these nine years to be like nine days as we have been so busy in our work of making Snehalaya a child-friendly institution of Greater Guwahati. Working here has been a wonderful experience for me since it is all for a noble cause.”
